ABC news online with subtitles (close captions) nightline 08-23-10: Sea World Cited in Trainer's Death

Sea World Cited in Trainer's Death
Closer look at a shocking incident where a human relationship with a wild animal went horribly wrong. In February at SeaWorld, a 22-foot killer whale nickname Tilikum fatally attacked his trainer in front of horrified spectators.
Today the results of 6-months government investigation cited the park for a quote willful violation of workplace safety accusation.
That is backup by similar charges from a whistle blower. YunJi Denies has our report.
With 17 years seaworld, Dawn Brancheau knew what she was doing and loved every minute of it. She talked about her whole life. She knew she wanted to work with the animal. And she was in her dream. The 40-year-old was living at her dream. This home video shot moments before her death. She playfully feeds Tilikum treats.
But just minutes later, the six-ton whale would grab hold her ponytail drag her to her death. Jumped up and grabbed the trainer by the way and shaking her and finally her shoe floating. SeaWorld’s policy was not to allow trainers in the water with this whale because of its violence past. In 1991 before coming to Orlando, Tilicum drowned another trainer at a park in Canada. The whale grabbed her backfoot and grab her under.
Immediately there were questions about these images.
That’s Brancheau really lied in a pool water side by side with the 22-foot long whale.
Government investigators have spent the last 6 month tried to figure out what went wrong. Today they slapped Seaworld with a $75,000 fine
Saying that the while the park recognized the inherent risk of allowing trainers to interact with potentially dangerous animals. Nonetheless, it required its employees to work within the pool walls, on ledges and on shelves, where they were subject to dangerous behavior by the animals. It’s a claim echoed by Linda Simons today on “Good morning America”. The park’s former director of health and safety on the sea would Brancheau died. I found that that team members would be facing in danger.
And when they finally got Tilicum in the American pool and ___ up. Team member had committed to go into the pool to take Dawn out of Tilicum’s mouth while he was still flushing about it. SeaWorld dismissed Simons’ claim saying she was recently fired for poor performance. And accuse her of using the threat of negative publicity
to seek a sizable monetary payment from SeaWorld in exchange for her not going public. The company called all she’s charges unfound and unsupported by any evidence or precedent. They said their trainers are among the most skilled trained and committed zoological professionals in the world today. Back to the February we met the man who brought Tilicum to Orlando and trained Brancheau. Today he maintains that Sea World did nothing wrong. Dawn for split second, made a critical error, she allowed her ponytail to drift into the water. And in front of Killer Whale’s mouth. And he grabbed by the ponytail and pull her into the pool. Who are you going to blame? Do you blame the whale? Is Sea World supposed to think of every single issue on how to keep people safe? These things that happened. Now if Sea World was not going to learn from this. But I know that’s not the case. Then they would be at fault. But they are going to learn from it. But another former trainer who worked with both Tilicum and Brancheau believe otherwise. Do you think that sea world is responsible for Dawn Brancheau’s death? This is all about a calculated risk for them. There is a cumulative death and injury record. Sea world took the risk beneficial risk out weight the risk. And they chose to continue to put the trainer in front of animal like Tilicum. And unfortunately someone like Dawn loses their lives. In my way of thinking, I don’t see how sea world is not countable in this tragedy of them. Why do you think Sea world is willing to take that calculative risk? First of all, being a killer whale trainer, everybody wants to be a trainer. So you know, trainer is basically disposable items. There is a long line of people behind you to replace you. Sea world knows that putting people into water sells tickets. This is all about a money making ___. This is Sea World’s nity  solution_____. This is sea world done this. How they sell ticket on the gate. So for sea world they know there is a serious risk of injury or death. But they had make a lot of money taking the risk and the benefit is the pay handsomely. Sea world has not allowed trainer back to the water with any killer whale since the attack. Says that whales and the trainer depend on their interaction. We have been able to develop these great relationships with them. Where they work with the trainer, and it a symbiont relationship. I mean trainers can get in the water with them and do all the amazing behaviors. We need continue to learn about that. If trainer allowed back to water with the killer whales at sea world park. There will be another injuries and/or death. OSHA has given Seaworld 15 days to pay up. Seaworld is challenging the fine. So for now the show on a fight goes on.
